“If a mother smokes during pregnancy it will raise blood pressure in the newborn baby”, shows a new Dutch study.
456 healthy, full-term babies were included in this study, and their blood pressure was checked when they were about 2 months old.
Most of the babies’ mothers, nearly 80%, reported that they did not smoke during pregnancy and also did not get exposed to tobacco smoke. Another 14% of them said they did not smoke while pregnant, but were exposed to secondhand smoke. But, the remaining 6% said they smoked while pregnant.
In case of babies born to mothers who smoked while pregnant, they had an average systolic blood pressure that was 5.4 points. This is higher than the blood pressure of babies whose were exposed to secondhand smoke or did not smoke while pregnant.
“These findings are independent of various factors like the birth weight of the babies, the age of the mother, or whether the babies were breastfed or not”, said the researchers.
But the mother’s smoking habit or exposure to secondhand smoke didn’t affect the diastolic blood pressure in babies, which is the second number in a blood pressure reading.
Anyway, follow-up studies need to be done whether babies born to women who smoked while pregnant will have a rise in the systolic blood pressure as they grow up.
