Smoking and Aging - The Health Risks Smoking Causes in Older People

Smoking causes lot many damages to your health, and most of them are a concern to the older people. Here are some age-related conditions smokers at higher risk than non-smokers:

Cataracts. It cause older people lose their vision, and they have to go for a cataract surgery.
Macular degeneration: It is a major cause of blindness in older people. This leads to loss of central vision, and makes it difficult to read.
Gum disease and tooth loss: According to a study for more than half of the adults having severe gum disease in the United States cigarette smoking is the major cause.
Wrinkles. Smokers are nearly five times more at the risk of developing more and deeper wrinkles, when compared to non-smokers.
Baldness and premature gray hair: Certain chemicals in cigarette smoke break down the hair cells, and cause hair damage.
Hearing loss: Smoking decreases the blood flow to the cochlea in the ear, which carries sound to the brain. This causes decrease in the hearing ability in older people.
Incontinence: One study of 600 women found that women who are presently smoking and left smoking are twice at the risk of developing incontinence than those who never smoked.
