Dangers of Second Hand Smoke

Second Hand Smoke or Environmental Tobacco Smoke is the smoke that is exhaled by the lungs of smokers and the smoke given off by the end of a cigarette. Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and hydrogen cyanide.

People around smokers get to inhale the second hand smoke involuntarily and that leads to a lot of problems like –

Increased risk of Heart Disease by 25-30% and increased risk of Lung Cancer by 20-30%- Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths and 46,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.

Respiratory problems Slow lung growth in children - Secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age.

Sudden Infant death syndrome – There are 430 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the United States annually
