It is true that quitting smoking is not that easy in the initial stages.. It usually takes a person several tries to really quit. Many heavy smokers say that they have found it harder to stop smoking than stop drinking or stop using cocaine or heroin. There are many different ways to quit. One way does not work for everyone. Each person must try what works best for him/her. However, there are some basic steps that all smokers can take and find easy.
- Fix a deadline: Give yourself some time to gradually quit smoking, since this habit is not something that you could overcome overnight. By and by, make a concerted effort to meet the deadline.
- Nibble on healthier choices always: Chew on low calorie foods like celery, apples and carrots. Chew gum or suck on cinnamon sticks.
- Take In Fluids: The first few days, drink LOTS of water and fluids to help flush out the nicotine and other poisons from your body.
- Treat yourself: This is important. If you can, use the money you are saving by not smoking to buy yourself something special, big or small, that you usually would not have.
- Get more active: Walk instead of using the bus or car, try the stairs instead of the lift. Exercise helps you relax and can boost your morale.
- Don’t be too hard on yourself: Understand that pledges that are too hard to follow only doubles your craving for that puff. So, stop gradually. Allow yourself one or two a day initially if you really must.
