Experts Call for Dull Cigarette Packing to Cut down Smoking Drastically

Alluring cigarette packing designs too play a big role in attracting people to smoke. Cigarette companies especially design the packets that targets and tempts youth to buy.

Recently researchers at the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney said that cigarette packaging ought to be made as unattractive as possible to cut down smoking, who are calling for all tobacco products to be sold in dull and plain cardboard packs with only a health warning and a brand name.

The researchers reported that: “Cigarettes kill half their users and should be made as unattractive as possible.”

Professor Simon Chapman said that ostentatious packing styles became a potent marketing tool for tobacco companies and reduce the impact of serious health warnings.

He said that: “They are quite open about it. Now that the law prevents them from advertising, the main game is now via the pack.”

Adding to the above statement he said that: “Pack design is now the leading edge of making tobacco products attractive and interesting, particularly to young starters.”

The researchers also found that any type of tobacco packing which is plain attracts less to young people who see them as dull and ineffective.

The researchers concluded that governments should take active steps in this regard along with other smoking ban measures that may cut down smoking and deaths associated with smoking drastically.
