Increased symptoms of respiratory symptoms among infants and children due to cigarette smoke was highlighted in a study conducted by US researchers.
Sharon McGrath in the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology has stated that infants who are exposed to cigarette smoke are at a higher risk of infant death syndrome, lower respiratory tract infections and small airway diseases as compared to those who are not exposed to the smoke. Infants are vulnerable at that age and such exposure to cigarette smoke can impair their lungs.
To establish the impact of cigarette smoke on neonatal lungs, the researchers conducted the experiment on neonatal mice by exposing them to cigarette smoke for 2 weeks. This helped in understanding the overall impact of cigarette smoke on developing lungs.
