Passive smoking by parents can damage an infant’s heart. It leads to vascular injury and inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. Smoking parents fail to realize the damage that their smoking causes to their baby child.
These findings were revealed in a study presented at the American Heart Association’s annual conference. The survey is based on observations of 128 children, ranging from 2 to 5 years old and adolescents from 9 to 14. The impact of the second hand smoke on the cardiovascular system of the young child was observed.
The smoke in the blood of the toddlers was higher as compared to the adolescents, as they could not move out of the house. Toddlers, exposed to second hand smoke, are more vulnerable to cardiovascular diseases.
Parents should realize that toddlers are exposed to higher levels of second hand smoke from cigarettes, as they are confined to the house mostly.
