The Soho Clubs and Bars feel that they have much to offer in terms of food, beverages and entertainment that they will be able to cope up with the new legislation. Yet, they feel that the new law may encourage their customers to smoke on the streets. This may cause problems to the local residents. In Scotland, noise complaints increased by 1,000 per cent due to the smoking ban.
Most of the clubs and pubs are located in residential areas and the potential risk for noise is very high in these areas, incase the smokers move out of the pubs to smoke. The City Westminster Council preferred to control the noise levels by not allowing smoking on streets.
The American Cancer Society claims that double the number of gay people smoke as compared to heterosexuals. Smoking is a major killer of gays. Apart from the noise caused by the gays who smoke on streets near pubs, there is also the risk of increase in crime. Disorder could prevail. The security of the residents may be at stake.
