Middle age smokers can suffer form memory loss due to smoking. This was revealed in a 17-year-old French study highlighted in the Archives Of Internal Medicine. The study also found a link between dementia and smoking.
Dementia is rare among middle age people. On the other hand, cognitive function at this age is related to dementia. Lead researcher Severine Sabia, belonging to the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale in Villejuif, France holds the view that smoking is linked to poor cognition and decline over a period of five years.
It was also observed that ex-smokers improved their other behaviors related to health. Also, there was less residual negative effect of smoking on cognition.
The people observed as part of the study were between 35 and 55, when the research began. Questions were asked with regard to their smoking habits. Also, they were asked to complete memory , verbal fluency and reasoning tests. The tests highlighted that ex-smokers experienced a 30 per cent lower risk as compared to smokers of had low levels of verbal fluency and poor vocabulary.
The researchers concluded that smoking was linked to reasoning activities and memory loss. Ex-smokers of long standing have less chances of cognitive defects in vocabulary, memory and verbal fluency. By giving up smoking they improve their heath behaviors
