Advertising tobacco on radio and television has been banned, but yet the sale of cigarettes among teenagers is being promoted through internet. If one types “ smoking” one gets several responses to it, which market the product.
Professor Simon Chapman, a public health expert claims this is a dangerous way of marketing cigarettes to the younger lot. Pro-smoking messages are displayed, which are detrimental to the health of the youngsters. Images of young attractive women are shown and also that cigarettes help in weight loss.
Several anti-smoking groups favor the drafting of federal laws by the Federal Government to prevent internet providers from displaying material which violate rules of advertising tobacco.
Smoking is considered to be injurious to health. Efforts are on to educate the people about the health hazards of smoking. Anti-smoking campaigns are held to generate awareness among smokers to quit smoking. Naturally, the media also plays an important role. Internet is no exception to it. Most youngsters spend hours watching internet. Such exposures do determine their behavior. Pro-smoking information needs to be regulated in order to ensure that smoking does not become rampant among teenagers.
