In Bulgaria , every second person was a smoker and men smoke more than women. This was revealed in a survey carried out in 2007 and published recently on their Health Ministry website (30 May, 2008) around the World Non-Smoking Day.
Regular male smokers were around 46.6 %, while regular female smokers were 32.7%.Smokers who smoked occasionally were around 5.8% as well as 5.4 % respectively. In the towns and the villages regular smokers were around 39.7 % as well as 39.3 % respectively. The occasional smokers in these towns doubled those in villages. The maximum number of regular male smokers were between 35-44 years. As far as women regular smokers were concerned, a high percent of them (42.7%) were aged between 25 to 34.
Workers constituted the highest number of smokers (53.7%). Next were divorced or separated people (54.1%), singles ( 51.3%) and those who were unemployed (46.1%).Those in villages and towns started smoking between the ages 16 and 20.
