The tobacco industry manipulated the menthol content in cigarettes to attract new young smokers, thus encouraging them to become dependent on nicotine. This was revealed in a US study, which came to this conclusion after examining the documents of internal industry and national survey.
The study carried out by investigators from Harvard School of Public Health(HSPH) in Boston, Massachusetts, which was published recently (July 16th 2008) on online issue “ahead of the print look” issue of the American Journal of Public Health
Menthol cigarettes are very popular with teenagers, which encouraged the investigators to find out if the tobacco industry manipulated the menthol in cigarettes in order to win over adolescents and young adults as smokers.
Tobacco industry manipulated the sensory features of cigarettes, which includes menthol. This encouraged smoking initiation as well as dependence on nicotine. Milder forms of cigarettes are promoted to attract these young people
The researchers felt that to ensure public health, it was necessary to federally regulate tobacco products
The FDA Bill is presently before Congress. In case it is passed, then it will allow the federal authority to regulate menthol and additives in cigarettes
