Pregnant teenagers start smoking to have a small baby. They feel by having a small baby they need not go through much pain while delivering. The British Labor Minister, Caroline Flint made this claim after meeting a lot of health professionals and young mothers.
Flint is of the view that such an attitude was wrong, as it was myth to feel that smoking would ensure a small baby.
It is pain relief that one should think of and having a low weight baby does not means you will have less pain during delivery. Gail Johnson, expert, Royal College of Midwives says there is no evidence that having small baby would reduce labor pain. Obviously, smoking is not the answer to the problem. In fact, women should not smoke at all during pregnancy. Babies born from mothers who smoke can have deformities and suffer from health problems in the future. Also, smoking can cause a miscarriage or a low-weight baby.
Research has also shown that pregnant women who smoke have less chances of delivery at the prescribed date. Also they can give birth to a still born.
Despite efforts to ensure that pregnant women do not smoke, the percentage of such smoking is very high. Midwives are in a better position to make pregnant women aware of the risk of smoking. In fact, health professionals need to ensure that women are educated on this front.
