The birth anniversary of Indian national leader and international icon, Mahatma Gandhi, was commemorated with the official banning of smoking in public places in India. Although efforts had been made earlier also, but this time the Indian union health minister, Anubamani Ramadoss has decided to strictly enforce the law and anyone caught smoking in restricted places is fined.
Gandhi incidentally did not smoke or drink and was known for his will power and determination. Obviously, the occasion for such a ban was well chosen, as many still adhere to Gandhian principles and values and feel his philosophy towards life very relevant today.
The law will also apply to Bollywood, Indian film industry, and the actors will be discouraged from showing their charisma by holding a cigarette in their hands. In India, masses do follow what filmstars adhere to, and such a move will ensure that the filmstars themselves set up an example for their admirers by giving up smoking on the silver screen or in advertisements.
The countrywide ban will be enforced in places such as offices, hotels, restaurants, airports, hospitals as well as college campuses, bars and discos.
The managers and owners will be taken to task where there is a violation of the ban.
At present the fine amount is Rs. 200 ($5) and will soon be raised to $25 in the future.
