Third Hand Smoke: New Health Hazard For Kids

Secondhand smoke, which is a mixture of exhaled smoke and cigarette smoke is known to be dangerous to the non-smokers. However, long after the cigarette has been put out, the toxic chemicals may linger endangering the health of kids.  This term for  invisible toxic chemicals which linger long after smoking a cigarette is known as ‘third hand smoke’.

Why is Third Hand Smoke Dangerous?
When a person smokes, the toxins from the cigarette cling to the smoker’s clothing, hair or other surfaces in the home such as carpets, cushions etc. Some of the toxins present in third hand smoke are:

Children are mostly at risk of third hand smoke. They can ingest these particles unknowingly while playing with the objects or crawling in the house. They can also be exposed to these particles while playing with the smoker.

When kids are exposed to low-level tobacco smoke, they can develop psychological problems and cognitive deficits. Mothers can also transfer the toxins to the baby through breast milk.

Most smokers are not aware of the dangers of third hand smoke, which contains heavy metals, carcinogens, and radioactive substances. Parents need to be aware that simply closing the door, turning on the fan or smoking when the kids are not present in home does not help. Strict avoidance of smoking in the house is the only way to keep kids safe from third hand smoke

The best way to keep your kids safe from third hand smoke is to quit smoking. If not, smoke at a place far away from your kids’ reach.
