Fire started by careless smoking is the leading cause of deaths in fire accidents. Every year about 800 to 1000 smokers and non-smokers in the United States are killed due to fires caused by cigarettes and smoking materials. Fire triggered by smoking is preventable and and hence, smokers should practice fire safety while smoking.

There are many ways in which smokers can accidentally start a fire.  A lit cigarette accidentally dropped on a chair, bed, or sofa can result in fire in a short time. Lit matches or hot cigarette ashes tossed away can also trigger fire. Putting out a cigarette may only take few seconds, but it can avert a major fire accident.
