A bong is a smoking device used to smoke tobacco, weed, cannabis and other substances. It is a type of water pipe, similar in build to a hookah. A bong is smaller than a hookah.
Bongs are illegal in most countries, so is bong smoking. But bongs are sold in the guise of water pipes or incense burners in head shops all around the world. Smokers take advantage of this technicality to indulge in bong smoking.
How does a bong work
A bong has five parts.
Mouthpiece: The smoker draws out smoke from the mouthpiece. When the smoker covers the mouthpiece with his mouth, the bong becomes airtight. This enables smoke to get collected in the chamber.
Chamber: A continuation of the mouthpiece, a chamber is where the smoke collects. The length and width of the chamber varies from bong to bong.
Base: It holds the bong water. It is wide so that the bong can stand on itself. It is fixed in some bongs and removable in some other.
Stem: One end of the stem pokes out of the chamber and the other end sits in the water in the base. It takes smoke from the bowl and bubbles it through the water.
Bowl: This is where the smoke producing material is burnt (tobacco, cannabis etc.). It is connected to the stem. The bowl is removable in most bongs. This helps in easy inhaling of smoke, as air coming through the bowl inlet pushes the smoke out of the chamber.
Is bong smoking safe?
Most bong smokers say that bong smoking is safe, as the water filters out any harmful substances from the smoke.
But research has shown that even though the water filters some cancer causing substances, it does not remove them altogether. In addition, the water filtration allows the smoker to take in more smoke. This result in the inhalation of more harmful substances that in normal forms of smoking, like cigarettes.
So if anyone smokes through bong or any other water pipe thinking it is safe, they are only fooling themselves.
