Salvia is a natural perennial herbaceous plant which produces white blooms in summer seasons. The leaves of this plant are used for chewing and smoking as a drug, so as to obtain a euphoric mental state. It is easily available and not yet declared illegal which is the main reason for its availability and misuse.
Salvia leaves contain a substance called salvinorin, which is a psychoactive substance. This particular component causes hallucination effect. Though single use of this herb may not cause any harmful effects, however, when used continuously, it may result in dangerous effects.
Salvia smokers can experience altered motor functions and will be in confused states. Uncontrollable twisting and twitching of the body will occur. Also a person may develop dizziness and loss of coordination. It may even create a tendency to commit suicide as mental state alters.
Smoking salvia can cause restlessness, headaches, irritability, insomnia and bronchial irritation. It is therefore not at all advisable to operate any heavy machines or drive vehicles for at least 5 hours from the time of smoking.
Research has shown no proof till now about the addictive use of salvia. This has been not yet added to the list of addictive drugs. Salvia attracts users of all age groups. Those who smoke marijuana are even addicted to salvia. As many are unaware of the physical symptoms and after effects of smoking salvia, they end their life in disaster by taking too much of the drug.
